My beautiful and smart model Alice, is an acrobat. She has a really strong and flexible body. Particularly her upper body. I really wanted to sculpt her shoulders. In this simple pose, I think the symmetry helps to show that strength. With arms spread apart and vulnerable, there’s also a calm assuredness and even a deep spirituality which reflects another side of her personality.
Symmetry is something we are attracted to as humans. There’s a wish for this kind of perfection. But it’s not perfect. There’s a subtle asymmetry in the angle of the head and resulting shift in the arms and the rest of the body. Through this, there’s a potential for movement. Or having moved. I hope it’s more alive than perfect.
