This was the winning piece for the Odyssey themed Founders Sculpture Prize 2015 awarded by the Worshipful Company of Founders in association with The Society of Portrait Sculptors.
I chose to depict Odysseus disguised as a beggar. Living in a deprived part of London as I do, I see so many people begging but mostly they are not seen at all. I also wanted to echo the compactness and symmetry of Ancient Greek sculpture which I have always loved.
The pose is not the totally passive one that we expect most beggars to adopt. He is plotting his next decisive action.
